style rules to live by

chic, Lifestyle, floral-design-style, salon, smartstylebyshannonpaul, stylingShannon Paul

Hey guys!!! I know it’s a been awhile since my last post but this year one of my goals is to blog more frequently. Wish me luck :)

Having great style is so within your reach the only requirement is CONFIDENCE! Yep; it’s not having the most expensive outfit or the perfectly decorated home. It’s all about wearing what makes you feel like a million bucks or having pieces in your home that are uniquely you, tell a story and make your house feel like a home.

Here are a few style rules that I live by:

SHOP WITH PURPOSE. This is probably the thing I stress most to my clients. We have all fallen into the trap of a day of shopping and coming home with absolutely nothing we intended on buying or needing. Whether your shopping for clothes or decor items have a list and know what your shopping for. If you can’t make a list that means you probably don’t need it! When you shop with purpose your budget will thank you and you will end up buying things you truly love.

SPLURGE ON THE SHOES. Invest in the staples of your wardrobe that you will wear over and over again. I love trends just as much as the next girl but I spend accordingly when I know that I can’t see myself wearing that cold shoulder top more than a few times.

THE 80/20 RULE. Strive to have a closet that is 80% staples and classic pieces and 20% trendy. By doing this it becomes so much easier to develop your own personal style (bonus it really cuts down on your getting ready time) .

until next time

smart sunning

Shannon PaulComment

So guys this is not my typical post as it does not involve flowers, decor or a fun drink recipe.

Five years ago on Memorial day weekend I had spent my typical holiday weekend lying in the sun by the pool.  This is always my favorite weekend being it is the unofficial start of the summer season.  After that weekend I noticed a black bump on my left upper arm about the size of a dime, I had thought it was a bug bite of some sort.  Within two weeks that dime sized bump had quadrupled in size.  I was in need of a doctor's appointment but like most people I thought it would just go away.  Thank goodness for my Mom she was very concerned about the black bump on my arm that was growing at an alarming rate so I appeased her and saw my family physician.  He also thought it was a bite and removed it in the office that day.

At my two week follow up appointment he told me that it was not a bite but squamous cell carcinoma.  What???  How could a light haired, fair skinned, blue eyed, non sun screen wearing, ex-tanning bed user, sun loving women possibly have skin cancer.  It was a scary thing to hear however I realize how lucky I am and how much worse it could have been.  Because it was found so early the next step for me was to see a plastic surgeon who removed the necessary amount of tissue in order to make sure all margins were clear.

I don't avoid the sun today I am just smarter about it.  I make sure to wear sun screen and reapply religiously and wear a hat sunglasses.  I will always love being outdoors now I just do it a little bit differently.

what is a lifestylist and why you need one in your life

Shannon Paul

A lifestylist is a person who believes that investing in one's style means investing in one's happiness.  When I was ten I told my sister that when I grew up I wanted to tell people what to wear and how to set their dining room table properly.  It's funny how we know what our true passion is at such a young age.  Fast forward many years later...  I decided to take my love of  flowers, fashion, interior design and cocktail making and create a lifestyle business.

My goal is to create, inspire and help you live your best life!  As my business may seem a bit superficial on the surface it is so much more than that.  I am lucky to be able to affect my clients life in such a positive manner.  Whether it be designing the perfect setting and florals for your wedding day or special event, creating a home or business space that every time you walk in it makes you smile or showing you how to look and feel your best in your clothes I get to be a part of your best life and milestones.   Thanks so much for following me on this journey!!

welcome to Coven

Shannon PaulComment

There are some projects that you get to be a part of that will always have a special place in your heart. For me styling and designing Coven salon will forever be one of them!

Lizzi, the owner and operator of Coven salon is not only a super talented hair and makeup artist but one of the coolest chicks I have ever met.  A lot of blood (if you only knew), sweat and tears were shed in the creation of this salon.  The work ethic, determination and diy skills of this woman are beyond inspiring.

Creating this space was so fun for me because it is so different from any other space I have done.  Vintage, woodsy, dark, moody, chic and sexy are the words that come to mind when I look at this salon.  Many cans of paint and vintage shops later Coven was born.  Each and every piece in this salon has a story.  Take a seat in Lizzi's chair and she can fill you in.

sparkling +mint+melon

Minty Melon Sparkler

Light, fresh and sparkling make this watermelon mint sangria perfect for summer.  It even goes well with a hot dog.  I totally stole this from Chick-fil-A, they have a watermelon mint lemonade.  What a good combo for a summer sangria.  Enjoy!!!

Shopping list

  • 1 bottle of sparking rose per 34oz pitcher
  • Watermelon schnapps
  • 30 small cubes of watermelon
  • Mint
  • Club soda

How to

  • In a small pitcher (I used a 34oz pitcher) pour 4 ounces of watermelon schnapps
  • Add about 20 cubes of watermelon
  • Add a handful of mint leaves
  • Now you want to muddle the watermelon and mint together using a muddler; to muddle means to press the ingredients against the side of a pitcher with a muddler.  This releases the flavors so they bind with the alcohol
  • Add bottle of sparkling rose
  • Now you can pour/ makes about 4 serving
  • Divide into 4 glasses and top each with club soda
  • Garnish with 3 watermelon cubes and 2 leaves of mint

sip responsibly!!

rose' all day

Let's go on a picnic; don't forget the rose'!

What is the difference between a good photo and an amazing photo?  DETAILS.

Had such a blast creating this picnic scene for one of my couples engagement photos; the bride loves details as much as I do.  Having a shared love of wine; a rose' inspired picnic at one of their favorite local wineries was the perfect spot for their photos.

Happy picnic season everyone!! florals & styling by smart style by shannon paul

urban.rustic.chic dining room

floral-design-styleShannon1 Comment

I had so much fun designing this urban.rustic.chic dining space at value city furniture!  They started a made to mix campaign earlier this year.  Everything used for this look; except the florals of course I found at vcf.  I know right?!  The dining room is my absolute favorite room in the house.  Some of the best moments happen here.  How can it not?  Friends, family, great food and drinks; yes please!!

The first thing that caught my eye was that amazing airplane photo.  Choosing a black and white focal point for the space allowed for so many design options.  Next came the rug that had hints of gold, black, grey and white.  Color palette created.  I always find it helpful to start with one or two must have items and build my look from there.

Obsessed with the idea of a sofa in the dining room.  This classic cream color sofa was a perfect fit with the modern grey table.  Found so many fun pillows in different textures, sizes and styles.  Pillows are one of the easiest ways to change and customize the look of your furniture.  So if you are anything like me you get bored looking at the same space.  Needless to say I have somewhat of a pillow addiction.

Finding accessories for the space was no problem at all. So many options you guys!  No matter what your style is you won't have trouble finding great things here.  Next time you go furniture shopping be sure to check out your local vcf store.  So many pretty things and super affordable!!!

Thanks so much to the staff at vcf located in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  Debra and Tonya were so helpful and knowledgeable about their products.

this seasons MUST have accessory

"I'd rather wear flowers in my hair, than diamonds around my neck."

Flower crowns!  Summer is finally here and that means the season of barbecues, concerts and so many other fun outdoor events.  What other reason do you need to channel your inner flower child??  Put some flowers in your hair and enjoy the summer!  Give the floral crown filters a break and snap some pics with real flowers instead.

Crafting your own fresh flower crown will only require a few things: scissors, floral wire, flowers of your choice and a little time.

  • Begin by measuring your head with a piece of green floral wire
  • Cut 3 pieces of floral wire the same circumference of your head
  • Twist the end of the three pieces together and braid those pieces
  • Once the braid is complete make a circle and twist both ends together
  • Now the fun part! Secure your flowers and or greens to the floral wire base
  • Cut the stems of your florals leaving a 1/4 inch of the stem remaining
  • With floral wire (about 1 inch in length) secure each stem with the floral wire to the base

Flower crowns are one of my favorite things to make!  There are no rules so pick whatever flowers you like.  Depending on what type of flower you choose your crown will last 1-2 days.  Be the star of the your next summer event and show up with some flowers in your hair!!  Have a happy summer. why you should go to a greenhouse

Flowers make people happpy!!  Not only for us die hard flower fanatics, everyone reaps the benefits.  And how often can you say that?!

Flowers improve your emotional health.  You know how you can't help but smile and I mean a real, wrinkle causing smile when you receive flowers?  A study conducted at Rutgers University found what I have always know to be true; flowers have an immediate, positive impact on your happiness and overall mental health.

Fresh stems are a must have for my home.  Such an affordable luxury that makes a big impact in any space.  Love to see what your happy flowers look like!  Share a photo in the comments section.

A big thanks to the folks at Hendrick's Flower Shop & Greenhouses located in Lititz, Pa.  They grow the most stunning calla lilies I have ever seen!  My go to source when they are in season.

Can't forget to talk about the shoes!  Grey, suede coach booties.  They go with everything from jeans to a maxi dress.  A little platform and stacked heel make these comfy and cute.  Every girl needs a great bootie that she can walk in without fear of injury.
